How I Organize My Bookshelf by Color

I’m a huge fan of organization – clothes, DVDs, I even sorted my sister’s closet. But what I love to organize most of all, is my bookshelf.

I’ve organized and reorganized my books several times since I got the shelf a few months ago. Not only do I get to think without stressing myself, I can enjoy the quiet of my room (something I rarely get in my household of six; eight if you count my dogs), and I get to hold all my books! And, needless to say, I love my books to bits.

And lately I’ve noticed the growing popularity of books organized by color. So, naturally, I thought I’d try it out! 🙂 It was actually super easy and super fun. The result is, of course, beautiful as well. So let’s do this!

How I Organize My Bookshelf by Color

1. Snap a photo before anything else. Once the books are all nicely organized, I can go back to the picture and compare the difference. (I won’t be changing the bottom shelf, as it’s mostly journals.)

2. Pull all the books off the shelf. Yes, really! I won’t just knock them all onto the floor, however: as I take them off, I’ll put them into color-coded stacks on the floor. I do this to make putting them back up on the shelf an easier task later. The stacks, from left to right:
Green, brown, blue (2), black, white, red, yellow, off-white/cream, purple, and orange. But the order will change once they’re on the shelf.

(Note: don’t forget that only the books’ spines will be visible, so base the color wholly on that of the spine!)

3. Place on the bookshelf in the desired order. I’ll try to blend the colors smoothly with one another, but if you want a bolder look, contrasting them may be more your thing.

I’m putting my colors in this order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, white (the off-whites blend with the whites), and black.

Done! I can’t believe this was so easy. Though I do love how pretty it looks, I think I’ll probably go back to alphabetizing them in a few days – it’ll be hard to find the right book with this layout! However, it’s very nice to look at, and I’m satisfied with the result. 🙂

How do you organize your bookshelf? Tell me about it in the comments! 🙂

  1. Hey Sam! I organize my clothes from color too! But I do it purely for the color! The bookshelf in my room is just organized by different book series and stuff, but a little less than a year ago, (I think) I organized our homeschooling bookshelf, organizing then from different topics. Science, poems, history, taller books at the top that wouldn’t fit, American Girl books, and other random fun kid books! (By the way, I tried to subscribe, and all it said was, thanks for subscribing, writer! I don’t know if it was supposed to do that or not! Bye!

    1. Hi, Aynsley!
Oh, normally my books are organized by series, too – so far, though, my favorite order has been alphabetical (by author last name). That one was really fun to do! Your homeschooling bookshelf sounds very nicely sorted! 😉 And yes, if you get that message after subscribing, that means it worked. 🙂 Thanks for subscribing!
